CFIA-New requirements for import of milk replacer

New requirements for import of milk replacer

On February 4, 2025, the Automated Import Reference System (AIRS) will be updated with new animal health import requirements for milk replacers from countries other than the United States (US). The changes will apply to milk replacers for use in livestock (as defined in Section 1(2) of the Feeds Regulations, 2024) as well as other non-livestock animals. There will be no change to the requirements for milk replacers imported from the US, however importers are reminded that product from the US containing tallow must be accompanied by a certificate of analysis.

There will now be two categories of milk replacer products:

1) Milk replacers containing milk as the only animal origin ingredient
2) Milk replacers containing milk as well as animal blood and/or fat ingredients

Milk replacers imported from countries other than the US containing milk as the only animal origin ingredient may be imported accompanied by a zoosanitary certificate. The certificate must match the conditions published in AIRS for the country of origin. Importers of milk replacers from countries other than the US containing animal fat and/or blood ingredients must apply for an import permit. The import permit will provide details of the certification required to import the product. Importers may apply for an import permit through My CFIA.
